Tackling Hunger: A Collective Responsibility
The Yoruba One Voice (YOV) has issued a pressing call to the Federal Government and South West governors to urgently address the escalating hunger crisis in Yorubaland. They emphasized the need to make agriculture more appealing to the region’s people during their quarterly conference, which saw over 500 participants from six continents joining via Zoom.
Themed “Rescuing Yoruba Nation from Hunger: Your Task, My Task,” the conference served as a wake-up call for leaders to develop effective strategies that enhance agricultural interest in the area.
In his opening remarks, Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland and convener of the YOV, stressed the importance of government action to alleviate hunger in Yoruba land. He remarked, “Acute hunger knows no tribe or region; it is a widespread issue that requires an urgent solution.”
Adams highlighted that Nigeria is endowed with natural resources, particularly in Yorubaland, which boasts fertile land ideal for farming. He stated, “Agriculture is a global business, whether at a micro or macro level. We must expand our technological and mechanical capabilities in agricultural production.”
He also noted the decline in Nigeria’s cocoa production but expressed optimism that, with proper reforms from the governors, the region could still lead the market.
Prince Adeyemi Omisakin, the guest speaker, echoed these sentiments by advocating for support for local farmers. He remarked, “We must not only encourage the Yoruba community to return to farming but also ensure that they can engage in productive agricultural practices effectively and affordably. This will help revive our society and restore our standing among nations.”
