The Osun State government has relocated the state airport project from Ido-Osun to Akoda, Ede, citing technical issues, particularly an inadequate runway. According to Lai Oriowo, a member of the airport project technical committee, the existing runway is only 1.67km, which falls short of the required 4.8km for a standard airport.
Oriowo explained that the relocation is necessary to address several issues, including the runway’s length, culvert size, and drainage system. He also mentioned that the existing terminal building, control tower, and fire and rescue buildings are wrongly located in relation to the runway.
Despite the government’s explanation, residents and indigenes of Ido-Osun have protested the decision, calling it undemocratic and an example of nepotism. They argue that the relocation will benefit Ede, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s hometown, at the expense of other communities.
The state government has assured that the existing airport at Ido-Osun will still be used as a training school and alternate airport, in line with an existing agreement with the Air Force.
