The 2023 presidential aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has urged opposition parties to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku expressed concern that the APC’s actions were leading Nigeria towards a state of dictatorship and a single-party dominance.
Addressing a delegation from the national executive committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Tuesday, the former Vice President emphasized the importance of a strong opposition in preserving Nigeria’s democracy. Atiku stressed that without a robust opposition, the democratic fabric of the country could be compromised.
During the meeting, Atiku remarked, “You are here today to advocate for cooperation to enhance democracy. However, the reality is that our democratic system is rapidly evolving into a one-party structure, and as we know, a one-party system is incompatible with true democracy.”
He went on to highlight his concerns about the APC’s actions, stating, “We have witnessed the APC’s inclination to transform Nigeria into a one-party state, verging on a dictatorial regime. It is imperative for us to unite and confront the trajectory the ruling party is setting. Failure to do so may jeopardize our democracy, with far-reaching consequences that extend to future generations. Safeguarding democracy in our nation is a collective endeavor, extending beyond the interests of any single individual.”
