VP Shettima holds peace townhall meeting with Plateau leaders, stakeholders

On Thursday, Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed condolences and visited the victims of the recent attack by unknown gunmen in Bokkos and Barkin Local Government Areas of Plateau State. The attack, which occurred on Christmas Eve, resulted in the tragic loss of at least 70 lives.

According to a statement from Mr. Manzo Ezekiel, the Head of Press for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Vice President Shettima conducted a Town Hall meeting with various stakeholders during his visit. He appealed to them to actively contribute to the promotion of peace, fostering harmonious coexistence, and supporting the overall development of the state.

The statement emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting individuals and communities affected by the violent attacks. Vice President Shettima assured the victims of concrete measures to provide relief and address the prevailing security challenges. He conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deep concern about the incidents and disclosed that security agencies had been directed to apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

During his address at a temporary camp in Bokkos where displaced individuals had sought refuge, the Vice President informed the affected population that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had been directed to preposition humanitarian aid. This aid, he assured, would soon arrive in the affected communities, offering much-needed relief to those affected by the unfortunate events.

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives and to those injured and displaced during the recent attacks in Bokkos and Barkin Local Government Areas of Plateau State. He reassured them of the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government to ensure peace and security across the country.

During the visit, Plateau State Governor, Mr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their commitments to support the affected individuals and address the prevailing security challenges. Governor Mutfwang particularly appreciated Vice President Kashim Shettima for personally visiting the state.

Governor Mutfwang also expressed satisfaction with the prompt response from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the provision of humanitarian items. He pledged to join the NEMA team to ensure the equitable and fair distribution of these items among the affected population.

Upon arrival in Bokkos, the Director of Planning, Research, and Forecasting, Dr. Onimode Bandele Abdullahi, who represented the Director General of NEMA, briefed Vice President Kashim Shettima on the details of the humanitarian items intended for the affected persons. The NEMA team, responsible for leading the Vice President’s entourage to the camp, played a crucial role in facilitating the visit.

Accompanying the Vice President on the visit were the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Defence Staff General CG Musa, Chief of Defence Intelligence, and other high-ranking officials. In Jos, the Vice President was joined by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3rd Division Nigeria Army and Heads of security agencies in the State.

The reception committee, led by Governor Mutfwang, included senior state officials and leaders of thought. Notable personalities present were former Governors Joshua Dariye and Simon Lalong, as well as traditional rulers, including the Gbong Gwom Jos, and religious leaders. The collaborative efforts between federal and state authorities, as well as the engagement with local leaders, highlighted the commitment to addressing the aftermath of the tragic events in Plateau State.
