Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has stated that aspiring to become the governor of Lagos in 2027 is not a sin. Speaking at a press briefing at his residence in Ikeja, the Lagos capital, on Saturday, Obasa addressed rumors about his governorship ambitions, urging any leader in the state to clarify when and where he publicly expressed such intentions.
Obasa stated, “Having an ambition to become a governor is not a sin. However, I did mention on the floor of the house during the budget presentation that I had no thoughts of pursuing the governorship. But that does not mean I am not qualified or lack the experience, and I still maintain that position.”
He also addressed his recent removal as Speaker, pointing out that he is still the Speaker until proper procedures are followed. He criticized the heavy militarization of the assembly complex during the impeachment process and claimed that his removal took place while he was outside Nigeria.
Obasa was removed as Speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025, when more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted him out over alleged misconduct and various offenses. His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025.
