U.S. Renames Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’ in Bold Move

In a controversial decision, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DoI) announced on Friday that the Gulf of Mexico will now be officially referred to as the “Gulf of America”. This change follows a sweeping executive order signed by President Donald Trump, marking a bold new chapter in the nation’s history.

The Gulf of Mexico had carried its name for centuries, dating back to the 16th century, but Trump’s order seeks to emphasize “American greatness” by rebranding this iconic body of water, located between the southern U.S. and the east coast of Mexico. The move is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to showcase U.S. leadership and heritage.

In response to the announcement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stood firm, declaring, “For us, it will continue to be the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world, it will continue to be the Gulf of Mexico.”

Along with the Gulf of America renaming, the DoI also revealed plans to revert the name of Denali, North America’s highest peak, to its previous title, Mount McKinley. This decision effectively restores the mountain’s name, which had been changed in 2015 by the Obama administration as a gesture of respect for Alaska’s Indigenous people, for whom Denali holds great cultural significance.

Trump’s new order positions these “name restorations” as a reaffirmation of American values and historical significance, echoing his push to celebrate what he calls the “legacy of American greatness”.

With the changes set to take effect immediately, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names is moving swiftly to update all official federal records and maps to reflect these new names, reinforcing the Trump administration’s dedication to shaping the country’s identity for the future.
