Trump proposes an extensive travel ban affecting 41 countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering broad travel restrictions on citizens from multiple countries as part of a new ban, according to sources familiar with the matter and an internal memo reviewed by Reuters.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the list of affected countries is not yet finalized and remains subject to change. The proposal has not yet been approved by the administration, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The New York Times was the first to report on the countries under consideration.

On January 20, Trump signed an executive order mandating stricter security screenings for foreign nationals seeking entry into the U.S. The order directed cabinet members to submit, by March 21, a list of countries recommended for either partial or full travel restrictions due to inadequate vetting procedures.

This move aligns with Trump’s broader immigration policies, which he intensified at the start of his second term. In an October 2023 speech, he outlined plans to restrict travel from regions deemed security risks, including Gaza, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. The U.S. State Department has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

According to the memo, the proposed restrictions would impact 41 countries, categorized as follows:

  • Full visa suspension (10 countries): Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Venezuela, and Yemen.
  • Partial suspension on tourist, student, and select immigrant visas (5 countries): Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, and South Sudan.
  • Potential partial suspension if security concerns remain unaddressed (26 countries): Algeria, Angola, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Senegal, Tanzania, and Turkmenistan.
