agos Speaker Obasa in a Crucial Reconciliation Meeting with Lawmakers
The newly re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is currently engaged in a closed-door reconciliatory meeting with 39 lawmakers at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja. The meeting, which commenced at 2:10 PM, has in attendance Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers, in what is seen as an effort to restore unity within the legislative body.
A Strategic Move to Quell Tensions
The high-stakes meeting is designed to ease political tensions, pacify aggrieved lawmakers, and redefine the Assembly’s direction following Obasa’s dramatic removal and re-election. There is growing speculation that Obasa may not resign from his position as widely rumored.
As of 3:45 PM, discussions were still ongoing, with sources hinting that the Speaker is considering dropping the lawsuit filed against the Lagos House of Assembly and 33 lawmakers over his previous removal.
Re-Election Amidst Political Turmoil
Obasa’s re-election on Monday was the outcome of intense negotiations brokered by top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders at both the national and state levels. The dramatic return of Obasa follows the resignation of then-Speaker Mojisola Meranda after just a brief tenure.
His removal on January 13, 2025, by 33 out of 39 members, sparked controversy, with party members, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and supporters divided over the situation. The crisis prompted the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, who deployed a high-powered committee led by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba to mediate and restore order.
What’s Next for the Lagos Assembly?
With tensions still simmering, all eyes are on the outcome of this closed-door meeting. Will Obasa be able to win back the trust of aggrieved lawmakers? Will he officially drop the lawsuit? The coming days will reveal whether this peace move is genuine or just another political strategy.
