Tinubu to Co-Chair Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission in Cape Town

President Bola Tinubu is set to depart France on Monday for Cape Town, South Africa, where he will co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC). He will be joined by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the summit, which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, it was revealed that the summit will be preceded by a ministerial meeting on December 2, 2024, at the South African Parliament Building in Cape Town.

The meeting will see both leaders engage in substantial discussions on a broad range of topics, including bilateral, regional, and international matters of mutual interest. This will build on commitments made during their June 20, 2024, meeting in Johannesburg, following President Ramaphosa’s second-term inauguration.

The 11th BNC session will also feature deliberations across eight working groups focusing on key areas such as political consultations, consular and migration issues, banking and finance, defense and security, manufacturing, social sectors, mines and energy, and trade and investments.

At the high-level meeting, officials from both countries are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements to further strengthen their ties.

The Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission was established in 1999 to enhance cooperation between the two nations. This year’s meeting is particularly significant, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Commission, marking a quarter-century of enduring friendship and collaboration.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including state governors, ministers, and senior government officials, and will return to Nigeria after the BNC meeting.
