Tinubu suspends Betta Edu, orders EFCC to investigate her

President Bola Tinubu has taken prompt action by suspending Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from her position. The suspension, announced through a statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, aligns with Tinubu’s commitment to upholding high standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in managing the nation’s resources.

The statement emphasizes the President’s directive for the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, along with its affiliated agencies.

The suspended Minister has been instructed to hand over her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and cooperate fully with the investigating authorities during the inquiry.

Additionally, President Tinubu has established a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. This panel’s mandate includes conducting a thorough assessment of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programs. The goal is to implement comprehensive reforms, addressing any institutional weaknesses and rebuilding public confidence in these initiatives.

All directives from the President are effective immediately.
