President Bola Tinubu has assured Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support following her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In a congratulatory message, Tinubu lauded Okonjo-Iweala for her historic achievements, noting that her reappointment underscores the global community’s trust in her leadership. The statement, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized Nigeria’s pride in her accomplishments.
“President Bola Tinubu congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as Director-General of the World Trade Organization. Her historic appointment in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member WTO was a moment of great pride for Nigeria and Africa,” the statement read.
Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as WTO Director-General is set to expire on August 31, 2025, with her second four-year term commencing on September 1, 2025.
Tinubu noted that her reappointment highlights the international community’s confidence in her ability to drive multilateral trade policies that promote sustainable global development. He also praised her commitment to reforms that prioritize fairness and inclusivity in global trade.
“As a committed member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria will continue to support the WTO’s mission to foster a fair, inclusive, and equitable multilateral trading system,” Tinubu stated.
He expressed confidence in Okonjo-Iweala’s continued leadership, describing her as a critical figure in advancing the WTO’s role in global economic governance. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to supporting her efforts to consolidate bold reforms and equitable trade practices.
Okonjo-Iweala, a globally recognized economist, has led the WTO since 2021, becoming a trailblazer as both the first African and first woman to head the organization. Her leadership continues to be celebrated as a symbol of excellence and progress on the global stage.
