President Bola Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, played host to Asisat Oshoala, the Super Falcons striker and the recipient of the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award in Lagos on Thursday.

President Tinubu and the First Lady extended their congratulations to the Barcelona Femeni star for clinching the title of the best African female footballer for the sixth time. They praised Oshoala for her outstanding contributions to women’s football on the continent, recognizing her as a distinguished figure in the sport.

Highlighting the achievements of Nigerian women, the President emphasized that the accomplishments in football mirror the success Nigerian women are achieving across various fields globally. He commended their excellence, tenacity, ingenuity, and resilience, stating that Nigerian women hold a significant place in the world.

Acknowledging the remarkable achievements of other Nigerian women, such as star sprinter Tobi Amusan and those listed in Forbes’ ‘2023 World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,’ including media mogul Ms. Mo Abudu and WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the President and First Lady reassured Oshoala of the nation’s unwavering support for her and other Nigerian women pursuing excellence in their chosen endeavors.

Expressing her gratitude during a media interaction after the warm reception, Oshoala said, “I want to appreciate the President and the First Lady for giving me the opportunity to present the award to them. During the last World Cup, we had a couple of issues, and they intervened and have been very supportive to the girls, even after the competition.”
