Abuja — President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that the removal of fuel subsidies was a strategic move to safeguard the future of the next generation.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment, highlighting that government policies are designed to ensure long-term prosperity.
“I have listened to you carefully, and today is not for long speeches,” he stated. “I just want to reassure you that you are the hope of this country. Every decision I make is about securing a better future.”
He underscored the rationale behind removing fuel subsidies, explaining that it was necessary to protect future generations. “When you eliminate fuel subsidies, you are securing the future of our youth. Where is the investment in infrastructure? Many professionals are leaving Nigeria, but if we create prosperity at home and empower our people, they will stay. This is your country to develop, build, and make prosperous,” he said.
Addressing the youth directly, Tinubu stressed the importance of active participation in governance. “This government is all about you. Take it seriously. Criticize politicians if you must, but remember that politics is about development and shaping the future. I’m glad you are here to inspire change today, tomorrow, and beyond. I stand with you.”
Reflecting on the country’s economic progress, he remarked, “At the beginning, the situation seemed bleak, and we were struggling to find solutions. But today, the economy is turning around. Prices are dropping, confidence is growing, and investors are showing interest. The opportunities are here for you.”
Encouraging open dialogue, Tinubu invited young people to voice their concerns. “Look me in the eye and tell me what’s wrong and how you think things should be done. We will work to implement your ideas if they contribute to Nigeria’s prosperity. We are committed to making this country a better place, but we need your involvement. You represent over 60% of the population—you are the heartbeat of our nation.”
Inauguration of Youth Conference Planning Committee
Formally inaugurating the committee, Tinubu urged members to leverage technology, improve agricultural conditions, and seek innovative ways to empower the youth. “Let’s work toward food security and economic growth. I admire your energy—I can’t be young again, but maybe in another life,” he joked.
In his remarks, Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande emphasized that the planned youth conference aims to strengthen youth engagement. He praised the administration’s willingness to listen to young voices and incorporate their contributions into governance.
The planning committee includes representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, other key government ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and international partners like the World Bank.
Samson Itodo, a key member of the committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, commended President Tinubu for recognizing the importance of youth participation in national development.
