Tinubu approved N3bn for national social register verification – Presidency

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu sanctioned the disbursement of N3 billion for the validation of the National Social Register during the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

The National Social Register was established to facilitate cash transfers and implement various social investment programs under Buhari’s leadership.

On January 17, a memo from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, dated December 18, 2023, emerged online. The memo, titled ‘Conveyance of approval; Re: appeal to use N3,000,000,000.00 (three billion naira) from the Covid-19 palliative fund for verification of the national social register,’ has sparked diverse reactions. Some believe in its authenticity, while others dismiss it as a fabrication.

The memo stated:

“The above subject refers. Please be informed that Mr. President has approved the expenditure of N3,000,000,000.00 (three billion naira) only, from the Covid-19 Palliative Fund for verification of the National Social Register. Please accept the assurance of my highest regards.”

Confirming the legitimacy of the memorandum, Onanuga, during an interview with Punch, urged Nigerians to await the results of the EFCC’s investigation into the alleged misappropriation of public funds within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. Onanuga stated:

“The President has instructed the EFCC to look into the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and all these concerns are already under examination. I am confident that the EFCC has received the memo from the Office of the Chief of Staff, and they are actively addressing the findings. Let’s allow them to carry out their duties. There’s no need for redundant investigations or engaging in a media trial on a matter that is already under scrutiny. Nigerians should exercise patience. Once the EFCC completes its inquiry, they will submit their findings to the President, who will then take appropriate action based on the investigation’s results.”
