President Bola Tinubu, on Friday in Abuja, praised Finland’s decisive intervention in the case of Simon Ekpa, whose arrest and detention underscore the importance of preserving Nigeria’s unity. Speaking during the presentation of Letters of Credence from Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, at the State House, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for actions that fuel divisiveness among Nigerians.
The President commended the Finnish authorities for taking timely action, emphasizing that their efforts safeguarded Nigeria’s integrity and promoted peaceful coexistence.
Safeguarding Unity Through Rule of Law
Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the Finnish government for its commitment to upholding the rule of law, which aligns with Nigeria’s democratic principles. “I must thank you for safeguarding human rights in our country with the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is indivisible. We’ve faced turbulent times but remain committed to stability and cohesion for national progress,” Tinubu stated.
He also acknowledged Finland’s focus on key developmental sectors, including ICT, agriculture, and education, which align with Nigeria’s reform agenda. “Your priorities will significantly contribute to our growth and prosperity,” Tinubu added.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The Finnish Ambassador, Ms. Selin, lauded Tinubu’s bold reforms aimed at driving Nigeria’s economic progress. She emphasized Finland’s readiness to support Nigeria in areas such as energy, peace mediation, and bilateral relations. “Simon Ekpa’s actions had been a stumbling block, but with our cooperation, the ties between our countries are stronger than ever,” she remarked.
EU and Algeria Pledge Support for Nigeria’s Growth
President Tinubu also received Letters of Credence from the EU Ambassador, Mr. Gautier Mignot, and Algeria’s Ambassador, Mr. Hocine Mezoued. Tinubu urged the EU to strengthen trade relations and support Nigeria’s digital transformation efforts.
The Algerian Ambassador emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, particularly through projects like the trans-Saharan African Gas Pipeline. Tinubu reiterated the need for unity across Africa, stating, “We must lift each other and build a stronger continent together.”
