TikTok Removes Millions of Videos in Nigeria for Violating Guidelines

TikTok has announced the removal of over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 due to violations of its community guidelines. This action is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and secure platform for its users.

According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, the removed videos represent less than 1% of all uploads in Nigeria during the period. The report highlights TikTok’s proactive approach to content moderation, with 99.1% of these videos removed before being reported by users and 90.7% taken down within 24 hours.

TikTok emphasized its commitment to investing in technology to improve content moderation and understanding potential risks. The platform aims to ensure transparency and safety for its diverse user base globally.

Globally, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of those removals facilitated by automated systems. The company’s proactive detection rate has now reached 98.2%, demonstrating its efficiency in addressing harmful content.

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a private global company founded by Chinese entrepreneurs. ByteDance’s ownership is divided among global institutional investors (60%), its founders (20%), and employees (20%).
