Tight Security as Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Begins

Security was heightened at the Edo State High Court along Sapele Road on Monday as the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal held its inaugural session. Justice Wilfred Kpochi, chairman of the tribunal, called for cooperation from all stakeholders, including political parties, legal counsel, security agencies, and the media, to ensure a smooth and orderly process.

The petition, filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenges the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo in the September 21, 2024, election. Additional petitions were submitted by the Accord Party (AC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Justice Kpochi, alongside panel members Justices AB Yusuf and AA Adewole, emphasized the need to maintain decorum and focus on the legal issues at hand. “I am pleased with the calm and conducive environment today,” Kpochi remarked. “Let us sustain this atmosphere. Any concerns should be brought to our attention without resorting to unnecessary arguments or disruptions.”

Lead counsel for Ighodalo, Ken Mozia (SAN), assured the tribunal of their commitment to civility, pledging to advise supporters against gathering around the court. Similarly, Governor Okpebholo’s lead counsel, Oyinyechi Ikpazu (SAN), affirmed their dedication to ensuring a collaborative and orderly process.

The Benin Chapter Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Idemudia Osifo, also pledged support for the tribunal while raising concerns about the limited courtroom space. Justice Kpochi acknowledged the issue and assured attendees it would be addressed.

Although Ighodalo and the state PDP chairman, Hon. Tony Aziegbemi, were present in court, Governor Okpebholo was notably absent. The All Progressives Congress (APC) was represented by the State Legal Adviser, Stephen Okoror, and party leaders, including former State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Fran Okiye.

The tribunal adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, December 18, for continued pre-hearing activities. Justice Kpochi directed all parties to complete preliminary arrangements and agree on a schedule for the main hearing.
