Tragedy struck on Thursday morning when a gas explosion rocked the NIPCO filling station in the Eyean community along the Benin-Auchi road, Edo State. Three individuals were injured in the incident, including a station cleaner and a pump attendant.
The explosion occurred while an Audi vehicle, powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), was being refueled. Allegations suggest the blast was caused by faulty conversion kits and substandard gas cylinders used during the car’s conversion from fuel to gas.
In a 25-second viral video capturing the aftermath, the vehicle appeared heavily damaged as the sound of shocked onlookers filled the air. The driver and a technician, who had come to test the installation of the CNG kits, were at the scene when the explosion occurred.
Witnesses report that all three victims were immediately rushed to the hospital. The technician responsible for the installation has since reported himself to the police and is cooperating with authorities in their investigation.
Local sources also attribute the explosion to the use of a fake gas cylinder, which did not meet safety standards for CNG-powered vehicles. Concerns have been raised about the growing dangers of improper vehicle conversions in the wake of fuel subsidy removal.
