Bankole Wellington, also known as Banky W, a Nigerian singer and music executive, recently disclosed the story behind how he came to discover his former protege, Wizkid.
Contrary to popular belief that he found the ‘Ojuelegba’ sensation through social media, Banky W clarified that he actually encountered Wizkid in a studio setting. He emphasized that a tweet from Wizkid requesting him to sign was merely a jest, as the signing had already taken place prior to their online banter
In a viral video message circulating on X, the former singer-turned-pastor delivered a poignant message to his fans, emphasizing the importance of being proactive and diligent in their endeavors, allowing both God and their supporters to discover them in the midst of their work.
He expressed, “It’s crucial to be engaged in meaningful activities when seeking God’s guidance and assistance. While some may only engage with God through social media platforms like Twitter, it’s essential to remember that divine intervention often occurs while actively pursuing one’s goals.”
Reflecting on a recent Twitter frenzy surrounding an old interaction with Wizkid, the pastor clarified, “There was a moment where it seemed like Wizkid and I began our collaboration, but it was merely a playful exchange. In reality, we had already been working together for a year prior to that incident. I discovered Wizkid not through his tweets but through his dedication to his craft. I first encountered his music while scouting unsigned artists.”
He reminisced about their early days, revealing, “Before our formal collaboration, Wizkid had already showcased his talent by recording with M.I. The first time I met him in person, he was supporting another artist as a backup singer. He exhibited unwavering commitment and enthusiasm in his role as a hypeman.”
Recalling the past, it’s noteworthy that Banky W signed Wizkid to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment, in 2009, catapulting him to fame with the release of his debut album, “Superstar,” highlighted by the hit single “Holla at Your Boy.” Wizkid’s departure from EME followed the success of his sophomore album, ‘Ayo,’ in 2014.
