The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon Chief Philip Agbese, has refuted allegations of oil theft implicating the Nigerian Navy, asserting that investigations have proven the accusations to be false.
Earlier reports had suggested that certain members of the Nigerian Navy were involved in the illicit act of stealing crude oil. Tantita Security Services Limited, a private company contracted by the Federal Government for the surveillance of crude oil pipelines, had even threatened to release a video capturing an alleged shady oil deal involving Navy officers in the creeks of the Niger Delta region.
However, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Hon Chief Philip Agbese shared that discussions with the Chief of Naval Staff, Flag Officers Commanding various Naval Commands, and other senior Navy officers established that the allegations were unfounded and orchestrated by unscrupulous individuals with ulterior motives.
The lawmaker commended the Navy for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding crude oil pipelines. He called upon the public to dismiss the allegations, emphasizing the need for support to enable the officers to continue their essential role in securing the maritime domain.
Agbese stated, “We have engaged with the Chief of Naval Staff, the Flag Officers Commanding the various Naval Commands, and other senior officers of the Navy, and we are content with their explanations and responses. We anticipate that the Navy will use this vote of confidence to pursue oil thieves, as they have consistently done.”
He urged the public to disregard the allegations and rally behind the Navy’s efforts to protect the maritime domain and curb illegal activities. Additionally, Agbese commended the Navy for their professionalism and dedication, assuring them of continued support and oversight.
