The 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards have been canceled due to the ongoing conflict between the State of Israel and Palestine. The announcement came via a press release from the EMAs on October 19, 2023. The decision to cancel the 2023 edition was made with the safety of thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners in mind, all of whom would have been involved in bringing the show to life.
The press release stated, “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to proceed with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who would have traveled from all corners of the world to participate.”
The MTV EMAs, an annual celebration of global music, felt that in light of the ongoing events in Israel and Gaza, it was not the appropriate time for a global celebration. With the loss of thousands of lives already, it was deemed a moment of mourning. The statement expressed a hopeful outlook, saying, “We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024.”
The 2023 EMAs, initially scheduled for Paris on November 5, 2023, had been highly anticipated as it would have featured the debut of the Afrobeats category. Nigerian superstars such as Asake, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema were nominated for the award, alongside Malian-born French singer Aya Nakamura.
The EMAs will make their return in 2024 at the Paris Nord Villepinte in France.
