The 2023 Lagos State Street Soccer Championship commenced at the Obele Oniwala mini-stadium, marking a vibrant celebration of football. The opening ceremony featured matches involving teams comprised of men, women, and U-15 boys selected from various parts of Lagos State.
In the women’s game, Wazbak, representing Lagos Mainland, emerged victorious, defeating Middlewell from Lagos Island with a score of 2-1. The U-15 match witnessed Dolphin High School outscoring Kings College by two goals. In the men’s match, Ayo Davis Street, Surulere, faced a 2-0 defeat at the hands of BogunBolu FC Street FC.
The event was graced by the presence of Chairpersons from several Local Government Areas in Lagos, along with the Commissioner of Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunleke, and the Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Fuad Oki.
Commissioner Ogunleke commended the organizers for staging an impressive event and encouraged the youth of Lagos to venture beyond their comfort zones, urging them to seize the opportunities offered by initiatives like street soccer rather than waiting for traditional employment.
Bolaji Yusuf, Chairman of the Lagos Street Soccer Championship Committee, expressed satisfaction with the event’s turnout and assured a smooth and competitive tournament when it officially begins later in the month.
Mayoress Samiat Abolanle Bada, Chairperson of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA and co-chairman of the Lagos State Street Soccer Championship, emphasized that the championship aligns with the vision of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. She believes this grassroots event will create numerous opportunities for the youth of Lagos.
