The Kogi State House of Assembly has expressed concern over the recent surge in tuition fees at the state-owned higher institution, Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in Anyigba.
According to reports from DAILY POST, the university’s management has implemented a tuition fee hike, setting it at N75,000 for indigenous students and N100,000 for non-indigenous students.
During a session where the institution’s management defended its 2024 budget proposal before the House standing committee on education, science, and technology, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, voiced discontent, stating that the Assembly would reassess the situation.
The Speaker questioned the rationale behind the determined amount, expressing disapproval of the university’s attempt to transfer the burden of their financial challenges onto the students.
Deputy Speaker Paul Enema also chimed in, emphasizing that the imposed fee was excessively high, especially considering the additional financial strain on students who also bear the cost of accommodation.
In response, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, Professor Olusola Jamiu Salihu, justified the tuition fee increase by citing current economic realities and the soaring cost of diesel.
