The Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 Edo governorship election as a member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).
In his early morning declaration, Shaibu referenced recent political challenges, expressing his resilience in the face of adversity, particularly with regard to his relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Originally scheduled to occur at Eterno Hotels, GRA, Benin, the declaration event was relocated to the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Central in Benin City due to a conflicting event organized by one of Governor Obaseki’s support groups. Despite this shift, Shaibu addressed his supporters, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to realizing his political ambition.
Describing himself as a “100 percent Home Boy,” Shaibu emphasized his deep understanding of the state, countering the notion of an imported candidate. He outlined five pillars for his campaign, focusing on infrastructural development, economic diversification, education, sports, skills development and job creation, healthcare, social welfare, agriculture, rural development, poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and transparent governance.
Highlighting the achievements of his collaboration with Governor Obaseki over the past seven years, Shaibu asserted that there is still work to be done. He expressed awareness of the people’s desire for a more inclusive government, promising a leadership that understands the needs and aspirations of the average Edolite.
Shaibu cited impressive growth in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), attributing it to the implementation of digital and innovative ideas. Recalling his track record as a legislator, he mentioned the delivery of numerous constituency projects and emphasized his dedication to the people’s well-being.
In a resolute declaration, Shaibu affirmed his candidacy for the governorship, positioning himself as the original Edo son and promising a government that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2024 election.
