The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, affirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the 2024 budget, ensuring it fulfills its promises to the Nigerian people.
Present during the signing of the 2024 budgetary appropriations on January 1, Hon Abbas highlighted President Tinubu’s address, where the President humorously emphasized that the commitments outlined in the 2024 budget were not mere tavern talk but solid promises. The President expressed confidence that the budget would lay the groundwork for the ambitious renewed hope agenda.
Hon Abbas commented, “I believe this is the budget eagerly anticipated by the Nigerian people. Together, we will ensure its effective delivery.”
He also provided a brief overview of recent legislative achievements, noting that President Tinubu had signed two bills. The first was the supplementary appropriation bill of 2023, with an extension of 90 days to run concurrently with the 2024 budget until March 31. Additionally, the 2023 main budget received approval to operate concurrently with the capital component of the 2024 budget until March 31, 2024.
Highlighting a significant accomplishment, Abbas mentioned the approval of the securitization of ways and means, putting an end to the controversial practice of borrowing money through such means. President Tinubu assured Nigerians that this marked the conclusion of such incidents, providing a positive outlook for the nation’s financial practices.
