Otunba Segun Showunmi, the former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, has launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as ‘The Alternative’. This movement aims to revive Nigeria’s democracy by addressing issues like electoral integrity, ideological direction in political parties, and declining voter confidence.
Showunmi emphasized the need for a credible opposition to counterbalance government activities and restore citizens’ faith in democratic processes. The coalition will focus on advocacy and voter education to combat vote trading and reorient citizens on the consequences of electing individuals with questionable wealth or integrity.
The movement plans to engage citizens and mobilize grassroots support through zonal town hall meetings across six geopolitical zones, starting in December 2024. Showunmi noted that Nigeria’s democracy has regressed, with elections becoming less credible despite improvements in guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
