Former Senator representing Kaduna Central in the Senate, Senator Sani Shehu, has asserted that Nigeria’s economy was significantly damaged during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, attributing the current economic challenges in the country to his administration.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Senator Sani highlighted that certain economic strategies being implemented by President Bola Tinubu now, which have contributed to the prevailing economic difficulties, should have been executed by Buhari earlier. He criticized Buhari’s failure to implement these policies, which led to the deterioration of the economy.
Sani emphasized, “We must face the truth; the problems we’re grappling with today were initiated, fostered, and perpetuated by the Buhari administration. The Buhari administration fundamentally undermined the Nigerian economy.”
He also absolved Tinubu of blame for the current economic situation, stating that Tinubu had been transparent about his intentions to implement certain policies during his campaign. Sani asserted that Tinubu had been straightforward about removing subsidies and withstanding any resultant protests. Consequently, Sani argued that Nigerians were aware of what to expect when they voted for Tinubu.
Reflecting on recent protests against the economic hardships resulting from Tinubu’s policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange rate, Sani acknowledged the rights of Nigerians to protest. However, he cautioned that the concern should not be the organized protests led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), but rather any unorganized civil unrest that might arise.
