Sexual Harassment in Nollywood: Trinity Ugonabo Speaks Out

Nollywood Actress Trinity Ugonabo Opens Up About Sexual Harassment

Veteran actress Trinity Ugonabo has spoken out about her experience with sexual harassment in Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood.

Ugonabo, who was a guest on the radio program “Nollywod on Radio,” revealed that she had been harassed but declined to share specific details. She described the experience as “devastating” and admitted to considering leaving the industry altogether.

“It got to the point where I thought, ‘girl, find something else to do,'” Ugonabo said. “They come and say, ‘Do this with me and you get this.’ But how many people are you really going to sleep with? It implies that you literally have to sleep with someone to get ahead. I got tired and decided to focus on hairstyling and makeup.”

Ugonabo also addressed the economic challenges facing the industry. She explained that she has raised her артиста (artista) fee, a term likely referring to her acting rate, to cope with the rising cost of living.

“Everything has to go up,” she said. “If it doesn’t, I’d be hurting myself. My fee has increased because that’s the only way I can manage these tough times. Otherwise, I might be begging on the street or starting a GoFundMe campaign.”

Finally, Ugonabo discussed the perception of female producers in Nollywood. She challenged the stereotype that they are mean and overly competitive.

“Some people think female producers are unfriendly and mean,” she said. “I believe that’s a misconception. They think female producers are harsh and always competing, especially with each other.”
