The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday directed the Committee on Special Duties to investigate claims that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had invaded the National Assembly complex. These allegations, circulating on social media, suggested the DSS presence was linked to an impeachment threat against principal officers by some dissatisfied lawmakers.
During the Senate plenary, Akpabio denied the accusations, labeling them as false. He expressed concern about the growing impact of fake news, stressing that no impeachment discussions had taken place, and the National Assembly was functioning without any significant internal conflicts.
Akpabio tasked the committee, chaired by Senator Shehu Kaka of APC Borno Central, to conduct a swift investigation and report their findings within 24 hours. He also lamented the increasing influence of misleading online publications, noting how quickly such fabricated stories can gain traction.
Social media platforms were flooded with claims that DSS operatives, dressed in dark suits and wearing sunglasses, had taken control of the National Assembly, allegedly in response to an impeachment attempt against Akpabio and other key officers. The reports suggested that some Northern senators, unhappy with President Bola Tinubu’s performance, were behind the supposed plot.
Akpabio reiterated that the story was baseless, pointing out that the majority of senators were present and actively participating in legislative sessions during the time of the alleged incident. He has since referred the issue to the Committee on Special Duties for a thorough investigation.
