Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, has publicly announced his endorsement of the peace agreement facilitated by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at resolving the longstanding political discord in the state.
The prolonged conflict arose from tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister. Governor Fubara emphasized his acceptance of the peace deal during a state-wide address commemorating the 2023 Christmas celebration.
In his speech, the governor acknowledged that the intervention by the President has created an opportunity for the amicable resolution of the political strife within the state. Despite acknowledging mixed reactions to the directives, Governor Fubara clarified that, upon thorough examination, the terms of the pact are not as unfavorable as some perceive.
He stated, “As a central participant in this entire saga, I have dedicated considerable time to scrutinize the terms, and I have concluded that the Peace Pact is not as dire as depicted by those genuinely opposed to it. It does not spell a death sentence but rather offers a pathway to lasting peace and stability in our beloved state.”
Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to the Presidential Peace Proclamation, emphasizing that he will implement its spirit and letter in a manner that restores political stability to the state without compromising the collective interests of the people and the democratic values they hold dear.
Highlighting the strides taken by both parties in implementing the proclamation, the governor reiterated that, in the pursuit of peace, no price is too high, underscoring the importance of fostering a stable and harmonious political environment for the benefit of the citizens.
