The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its intention to formally communicate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging a new election in the 25 state constituencies of Rivers State due to the defection of 25 House of Assembly members.
This resolution emerged from a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP held on Wednesday. The NWC extensively assessed the party’s situation in Rivers State before arriving at this decision. Debo Ologunagba, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, conveyed this information in a press statement issued on Wednesday.
Ologunagba stated that the NWC has instructed the party’s national legal adviser to initiate the necessary legal proceedings in response to the defection of the 25 House members, in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Emphasizing the protection of the people’s votes and mandates in the 25 state constituencies, the PDP pledged to take all requisite measures to prevent any misappropriation of these electoral outcomes.
The official statement demanded that INEC conduct a fresh election in the 25 state constituencies of Rivers State where vacancies now exist in the House of Assembly due to the defection of the 25 former members, within the constitutionally specified timeframe.
