Renowned singer Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shallipopi, recently shared how his fellow artist from Edo State, Rema, served as a source of inspiration for him and others in believing in their artistic abilities.
Speaking on The Zero Conditions podcast, the Benin-born artist expressed the challenges faced by artists in Benin, feeling that achieving musical stardom was reserved for those in Lagos and Abuja. However, he credited Rema, particularly after D’Prince signed him to Jonzing World, as a beacon of hope for artists in Benin.
Crown Uzama revealed, “In Benin, we lacked the confidence to believe we could break into the music scene. We perceived musical stardom as something only accessible to residents of Lagos and Abuja. It was only after Rema emerged, following his signing to Jonzing World by D’Prince, that we realized it was possible for artists from Benin to reach stardom. There was newfound hope. If Rema could make the crossover, so could we.
“As Rema made his journey to Lagos, we closely watched his progress. We were his day-one fans, and he is aware of that. We’ve been following him since the days of his freestyle videos on social media, through his trap EP, to his current heights. Rema was the one who instilled in us the belief that we too could achieve success in the music industry.”
