Coalition of Northern Groups Condemns Government’s Treatment of Minors Detained for Protesting
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly criticized the Nigerian government for the recent detention and arraignment of minors who participated in protests against hunger and poor governance. According to reports, the children, held for over 90 days, were arraigned in an Abuja High Court, where several reportedly collapsed from hunger and lack of medical care during the hearing.
In a statement by National Coordinator Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG condemned the government’s actions, describing the treatment of the detained minors as a gross abuse of power and a failure to uphold the welfare of its youngest citizens. The statement highlighted that these children, who protested for a better future, are being punished under harsh conditions, while armed criminals in the country often evade similar consequences.
CNG stressed that this disregard for children’s rights goes against both domestic laws and international human rights standards. The organization called for the immediate release of the minors, urging the government to engage in dialogue rather than intimidation with its citizens, especially the youth who represent Nigeria’s future.
