The Premier League has clarified why Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, was sent off during their match against Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder received a straight red card for what was deemed “serious foul play” following a tackle on Spurs’ James Maddison.
The incident occurred in the 42nd minute, with United trailing 1-0 after Brennan Johnson’s goal. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed via a tweet during the game that the red card had been reviewed by VAR.
“The referee issued a red card to Fernandes for a challenge on Maddison,” the statement read. “The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call of serious foul play.”
