The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd is set to finalize test runs at the Port Harcourt refinery this month, marking a significant milestone in restarting operations after a five-year shutdown, as stated by the company yesterday.
NNPC spokesperson Femi Soneye informed Reuters, “Testing will be concluded shortly to ensure the refinery operates efficiently. This phase is expected to be completed within this month.”
Undergoing an upgrade, the refinery will initially process 60,000 barrels per day, with NNPC anticipating a full operational capacity of 210,000 barrels per day by the end of this year.
The Port Harcourt refinery is one of the state-owned facilities in Nigeria that has remained inactive for several years. However, the government is actively working to revive these refineries to reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined products.
