Police exonerate actress Lizzy Anjorin from allegations of gold theft.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal has not been found guilty of theft, following allegations of gold theft at the Oba Akintoye Market in Lagos Island.

In a conversation with Punch, the police command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that their investigation revealed that the video depicting market traders accusing Anjorin-Lawal of stealing was based on misinformation.

He explained, “There was no case of theft to begin with. Our inquiry uncovered that the vendor provided the incorrect account number. Out of the ten digits required, one was mistakenly provided, leading to Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal transferring funds to the wrong account.”

Hundeyin added that after determining the incident was a misunderstanding, Anjorin-Lawal endured the accusations, but later, after the suspects were arrested and the case was taken to court, she opted to withdraw her complaint for personal reasons.

He further noted that those who accused Anjorin-Lawal acknowledged their error in their statements at the police station, clarifying that the seller had given her incorrect account details.

“Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal transferred the intended amount, approximately N90,000, into the wrong account as per the details she received. There is a receipt for this transaction. To avoid further complications, she subsequently made a second transfer to the correct account,” he said.

Hundeyin reiterated that the police investigation concluded that Anjorin-Lawal was not involved in any theft, stating, “Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal did not commit theft according to our findings.”

The actress, a mother of one, visited the market in February of this year to shop for items. During her visit, she was accused of theft, and a video of her being harassed and assaulted by some traders circulated on social media. Six traders were arrested in connection with the assault and were later charged in the Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos Island for allegedly assaulting and blackmailing Anjorin-Lawal.

The accused—Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Simiat Morenike—pleaded not guilty during the trial. The court granted each of them bail set at N200,000 with one surety required. They were released from the Nigerian Correctional Services after fulfilling their bail conditions.
