The presidential candidate for the 2023 elections from the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has categorically condemned fuel subsidies, referring to them as a form of organized crime. This statement was made during his appearance on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, made his position clear on this contentious issue and outlined his strategy for addressing the looming strike threats by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.
In his candid remarks, Obi stated, “Fuel subsidy is nothing short of organized crime. I’ve consistently advocated for its removal.”
He went on to elucidate his approach, explaining, “In my view, the first step would be to root out corruption and criminal elements associated with the subsidy, while simultaneously addressing the excess demand. This would result in a substantial 50% reduction.”
Obi continued, “The remaining 50% could then be phased out in an organized manner through consultations with relevant stakeholders. The funds generated from this removal would be channeled into critical development sectors.”
