Bishop Mathew Kukah, the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, has shared his perspective on the ongoing government palliatives, asserting that they fail to provide effective solutions to the challenges faced by Nigerians.
In his Christmas message titled “Time to Reclaim Nigeria’s Greatness,” Kukah highlighted the deep and structural nature of the problems, urging President Bola Tinubu not to hesitate in resetting the power template, irrespective of cultural or historical myths. He emphasized the need for tangible evidence over mere promises and stories.
Addressing the grave issue of killings in Nigeria, Kukah called for an immediate end to senseless violence, abductions, extortions, and kidnappings, advocating for the restoration of the sanctity of human life. He opposed the inclusion of blasphemy laws in a democracy and insisted on identifying and punishing those responsible for taking lives. Additionally, he urged the establishment of a culture of compensation for victims.
Discussing the 2023 elections, Kukah highlighted their consequences and called on leaders to prioritize national healing. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the nation in staying united and stressed the importance of reconciliation, suggesting a revisitation of past National Conferences for guidance.
Directing his message to President Tinubu, Kukah extended congratulations and emphasized the critical responsibility ahead. He urged the President to address issues such as corruption within the public service, emphasizing the need for a thorough cleanup to achieve the delivery of essential services.
Acknowledging the initial steps taken by the government, Kukah emphasized the necessity of an inclusive government and an end to partisanship. He called for the dismantling of the deeply rooted culture of corruption, urging the Renewed Hope Agenda to be grounded in faith and hope for the restoration of the nation’s glory.
While expressing concerns about the suffering caused by certain policies, Kukah urged deliberate efforts to restore hope among the impoverished and vulnerable segments of society. He appealed to Nigerians to maintain faith in the country and encouraged self-examination and repentance for collective progress.
In conclusion, Kukah reminded Christians of the true essence of their faith, emphasizing that being a Christian goes beyond mere association, requiring a genuine internal transformation for meaningful impact.
