The Oyo State Government has committed a sum of N10 million to honor veterans and fallen heroes of the Armed Forces.
Governor Seyi Makinde announced this contribution during the launch of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund Raising Week at the executive council chambers of the Oyo State Governor’s office in Ibadan on Thursday.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering dedication of the Armed Forces—past and present—in safeguarding the nation’s democracy, Governor Makinde acknowledged their sacrifices, even to the extent of making the ultimate sacrifice.
Recognizing the proactive nature of the Armed Forces, the governor emphasized the importance of applauding and supporting these individuals, who often work in challenging environments.
In addition to the state’s contribution, Governor Makinde personally donated N1 million. Furthermore, he directed each of the 33 local government administrations to allocate a monthly subvention of N200,000, covering running costs, to the office of the Nigerian Legion within their jurisdictions. The State Council of the Legion in Oyo State was approved to receive N500,000.
These approvals were in response to requests from the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Dr. Ogunkojo Adeyemi. The requests included provisions for official vehicles, renovation of the council headquarters of the legion, and an increment in the salary of personnel stationed at the State Secretariat in Ibadan.
Dr. Ogunkojo emphasized the need for increased support from the government, individuals, and organizations for the families of ex-servicemen and individuals who dedicated their lives to ensuring the security and peace of Nigeria.
