Former Edo State Governor and current Senator representing Edo North District, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticized Nigerian Labour Unions, accusing them of neglecting the welfare of Nigerian workers through their strike actions.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Oshiomhole urged Organised Labour to focus on overseeing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Federal Government on October 2, 2023, rather than resorting to strikes.
Oshiomhole emphasized that he supports actions against any government neglecting workers’ issues but cautioned against mixing political opinions with responsibilities. He highlighted the importance of addressing the multitude of challenges facing workers and stressed that the recently granted N35,000 Wage Award should benefit all workers, including those employed by local and state governments.
As a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Oshiomhole advised Labour Unions to mobilize their members across all states to ensure the Federal Government fulfills its commitments to improve the living conditions of Nigerians. While expressing his disapproval of any mistreatment of Nigerians, including Labour leaders, he urged the NLC to engage state governments that are not implementing the agreed-upon wage increase, emphasizing the need for comprehensive action beyond federal government employees’ concerns.
