On Biafra Day, businesses in Anambra were shuttered as police apprehended a sit-at-home enforcer.

Several establishments, including markets, schools, banks, and motor parks along prominent streets in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, were shut on Thursday to observe Biafra Remembrance Day, as declared by the banned separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

By 9 am, the usually bustling Enugu-Onitsha Expressway was eerily quiet, with no signs of human or vehicular activity. Even popular motor parks in the vicinity were deserted.

Reports from Onitsha and Nnewi indicate a more pronounced impact, with residents choosing to stay indoors amidst the prevailing situation.

Numerous messages circulating online, purportedly from IPOB members, have issued threats against individuals planning to venture outside their homes on May 30.

However, the Anambra State Police have reported the arrest of an individual involved in enforcing the sit-at-home directive. According to a press release by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesperson, citizens are urged to dismiss such propaganda and remain law-abiding.

Ikenga disclosed an incident on May 29, 2024, where police operatives intercepted a group of armed individuals near the Oba flyover in Idemili South. One suspect was apprehended, while three others escaped with gunshot wounds. Recovered items included a locally made pistol, cartridges, phones, and evidence suggesting anti-government activities.

Assuring residents of safety, the police, alongside other security agencies, have intensified efforts to maintain law and order. Hotlines have been provided for citizens to report any incidents of violence in their vicinity.
