Oil Theft: Tompolo Accuses Navy of Hindering Tantita’s Efforts, Calls for Unity to Save Nigeria’s Economy

The Chairman of Tantita Security Services Limited, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, has called out the Nigerian Navy, accusing its personnel of sabotaging efforts to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta. Tompolo urged Nigerians to unite in the fight against oil theft, emphasizing the critical impact on the country’s economy.

Tompolo made these remarks during a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN, at Oporoza, Delta State.

Navy and Tantita: Conflicting Missions

Tompolo highlighted incidents where Navy personnel allegedly shot at Tantita operatives during joint operations with the NSCDC and DSS to apprehend vessels linked to oil theft. He lamented that Tantita’s operations face resistance from entrenched interests in Lagos, Abuja, and neighboring countries:

“We are stepping on a lot of toes. The big players in Lagos and Abuja are not happy with our work. Recently, Navy officers fired at Tantita operatives alongside the Police, DSS, and Civil Defence while intercepting a vessel in Port Harcourt,” he said.

He further revealed that Tantita operatives, despite their efforts, face legal battles orchestrated by influential players in the oil theft network.

NBA’s Commitment to Oil Theft Awareness

NBA President Afam Osigwe SAN assured support for efforts to combat oil theft, recognizing its devastating impact on Nigeria’s economy.

“We resolved during our NEC meeting that our branches in oil-producing communities must prioritize issues related to oil theft, which negatively affect national revenue and hinder democratic dividends,” Osigwe stated.

He commended the collaboration between Tantita, NNPCL, and the National Security Adviser in improving Nigeria’s oil production, noting that daily oil production has risen above 1.3 million barrels per day for the first time in years.

Impact on Niger Delta Communities

The Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM Oboro Gbaruan II, expressed gratitude to the NBA for their visit, emphasizing the region’s commitment to peace and economic stability.

“We are peaceful people, working for the peace of the Niger Delta. However, the government must recognize the contributions of oil-bearing communities like Gbaramatu and address our needs,” the monarch stated.

He urged the government to channel resources into the Niger Delta to foster economic development and ensure mutual benefits.

Call for Unity

Tompolo ended with a plea for Nigerians to join hands in safeguarding the nation’s resources:

“If we do not act now, the country may lack funds to address critical needs. The fight against oil theft must involve everyone, as it affects our collective future.”
