Ogun Government Announces Price Control Measures and Bans Market Levies to Enhance Food Security

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced plans to implement a price control mechanism in the state during a recent meeting with market leaders, including Iyaloja General Mrs. Yemisi Abass, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun revealed that his administration will soon launch the Gateway Trading Company, formerly known as the Bulk Purchasing Company, to tackle rising food prices. The new initiative aims to provide more affordable food options by purchasing in bulk and reselling at lower prices than those typically found in markets.

“We are committed to implementing bulk purchase and selling throughout the state,” Governor Abiodun said. “Gateway Trading will help supply food items at prices significantly lower than what people usually pay. This initiative will begin in the four zones of the state, focusing on bulk buying and affordable resale.”

In addition to this, Governor Abiodun announced a suspension of all market levies except for Development and Environmental Levies, which are intended for market maintenance. He emphasized that any illegal taxes, such as loading, discharge, and offloading fees, would be prohibited. “We’ve identified various illegal taxes imposed on market traders, and we are banning these practices. Only Development and Environmental Levies, which are clearly defined and publicly agreed upon, will be permitted.”

The governor also noted that some individuals exploit farmers by coercing them into selling at inflated prices.

Mrs. Abass praised Governor Abiodun for his proactive approach in engaging market leaders to address these issues and improve conditions for the state’s residents.
