The Northern Coordinators of the #Endbadgovernance Protest, representing 19 states, have withdrawn from the planned October 1 protest, citing inadequate security measures for participants.
According to the coordinators, their decision came after the national organizers failed to address concerns about how to protect protesters and prevent hoodlums from hijacking the event, as seen in previous protests.
In a joint statement signed by the Chairman, Abdullahi Daura, and Secretary, Mohammed Musa Biu, the coordinators expressed their apprehension about a repeat of the violence that marred previous protests in northern cities like Kano and Kaduna.
“We’ve asked for security measures at protest convergence points in the north and submitted multiple requests, but we have yet to receive a clear response or plan to prevent violence and property looting,” the statement read.
In light of these unresolved security issues, the coordinators urged all members in the 19 states to comply with their directives and pull out of the protest until proper security clearance is obtained from the authorities.
While reaffirming their commitment to pressuring the federal government to reverse harmful policies causing hardship, the coordinators emphasized that the safety of lives and property remains their top priority.
