NLC Urges Nigerians: ‘Reject This Tariff’ After FG’s 50% Telecoms Hike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s recent 50% tariff hike in telecommunications services. The NLC is urging subscribers to take a stand and reject the increase, labeling it as an unnecessary burden on Nigerians already grappling with economic challenges.

The Controversial Telecom Tariff Hike

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the NLC boldly declared, “Reject This Tariff.” This call to action follows the Federal Government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecom service charges, a decision made after operators initially sought a 100% hike.

The tariff adjustment, the first in over a decade, aims to revitalize the struggling telecom sector, which contributes about 14% to Nigeria’s GDP. However, the NLC has described the hike as harsh and insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Key changes in telecom tariffs include:

  • Call rates: Increased from N11 per minute to N16.50 per minute.
  • SMS charges: Rose from N4 per message to N6 per message.
  • Data bundles: 1GB data now costs N431.25, up from N287.50.

NLC’s Response and Criticism

NLC President Joe Ajaero did not hold back his criticism, condemning the tariff hike as a direct burden on the Nigerian people. He expressed concerns over the government’s recent financial decisions, including the approval of N8 billion to “sensitize Nigerians on the need to pay electricity bills.”

Ajaero described the Nigerian power sector as being on the brink of collapse, blaming what he called “gross incompetence” among those managing it. He noted the frequent national power grid failures, pointing out that the current administration has overseen more collapses than all previous administrations combined.

Calls for Resignation in the Power Sector

Ajaero has called for the resignation of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and other officials over their alleged inability to handle Nigeria’s power challenges effectively.

He said:

“The constant grid collapses are an embarrassment and highlight the Ministry of Power’s incapacity. Nigerians deserve competent officials who can address these challenges rather than offering excuses or making light of the situation.”

Ajaero also criticized the electricity band system, calling it discriminatory. He questioned the fairness of placing Nigerians in different bands with varying electricity rates, adding that the practice deepens inequality.

A Unified Call to Action

The NLC’s firm stance reflects its broader advocacy for Nigerians’ welfare. As the telecom and power sectors face mounting public scrutiny, the call to reject unjust tariffs and demand accountability grows louder.
