Nigerians are warned to “relocate to safe areas” due to flooding.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning about the risks of flash floods and river overflows due to ongoing heavy rains.

Director-General Umar Mohammed urged citizens to take immediate preventive actions, such as clearing drainages and gutters, to mitigate flooding impacts. He noted that prolonged rainfall has already caused devastating flash floods in several regions.

Umar highlighted NIHSA’s commitment to monitoring water levels in major rivers and providing flood warnings and predictions.

He reported that the water levels in the River Niger and Benue have reached critical levels and advised residents near riverbanks to relocate to safer areas.

Emphasizing collaboration with emergency agencies and the media, he stressed the importance of safeguarding lives and property.

With the rainy season in full swing, the agency encourages vigilance and preparedness among citizens as it continues to monitor the situation.
