On Friday, December 15, Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET) announced the upcoming seventh edition of NET Honours, an esteemed annual awards ceremony based on audience data. Scheduled for announcement this December, the awards will spotlight some of Africa’s most renowned personalities.
This year’s NET Honours vows to bring exciting surprises, continuing its tradition of data-driven nominations derived from audience searches, engagement, and trends on ID Africa’s media channels—Netng, Neusroom, 234Star, and Orin.
Enthusiasts of African entertainment will once again have the chance to cast their votes for the celebrities who have left a significant mark with their accomplishments over the past year. In a departure from previous editions, fans will have a voice in 18 out of the 24 categories, recognizing figures and events that have shaped Africa’s pop culture in the past year.
Iretomiwa Akintunde-Johnson, ID Africa’s Regional Manager for West Africa, emphasized the impact of NET Honours on Nigeria’s entertainment industry, noting that as the African entertainment scene experiences remarkable growth, Nigeria remains at the forefront of global achievements. She stated, “African music, movies, and fashion are penetrating new grounds, breaking records, and our entertainers are charting new courses unprecedentedly.”
Nominees for this year’s awards will be unveiled starting Friday, December 15, 2023, featuring prominent names and breakout stars. The voting categories have expanded, and leading artists like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy are front-runners with three nominations each.
Renowned artists Ayra Starr, Tems, and Tiwa Savage secured two nominations each in specific categories. Rising star Rema, known for the hit song ‘Calm Down,’ and Asake, YBNL’s latest sensation, join the competition for the Most Popular Music Artiste category.
Other notable nominees span various categories, including Most Popular Actor, Most Popular Social Content Creator, and Most Popular BBNaija stars. In the non-voting category, power couple Adekunle Gold and Simi maintained their status as the Most Popular Couple for the third consecutive year.
NET Honours, initially launched in 2013 as a special recognition award, has evolved into one of the world’s premier verified audience data-based awards. Commencing as the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards in 2016, the awards went virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic, reaching over 10 million viewers worldwide.
Online voting for the 18 categories started on Friday, December 15, at thenet.ng/voting and concluded earlier this week. The winners will be revealed at a virtual event today, broadcasted via Netng’s social media platforms and website.
