Nigerian artist Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, commonly recognized as Spyro, disclosed that his father was initially unsupportive of his choice to pursue a career in music. Having previously discouraged Spyro’s aspiration to become a fine artist, his father’s opposition only fueled his determination to rebel and pursue a musical path.
During a recent conversation on the Tea With Tay podcast, Spyro shared that despite having parents, he resorted to undertaking various odd jobs, such as selling recharge cards, to cover his expenses. Additionally, he used the earnings from these jobs to finance studio time for recording his songs.
He expressed, “As the son of a pastor, my father initially discouraged me from pursuing a career in music. I was originally a skilled fine artist, proficient in drawing. However, for reasons unknown, he halted my artistic pursuits. Undeterred, I shifted to music, which he also sought to deter. This led to a rebellious phase.
“My passion for music dates back to my primary school days, where I actively participated in the church choir, earning praise from choir masters for my talent. I even played the drum set. Despite my natural inclination, my father vehemently opposed my musical aspirations. It became a personal struggle, but I was convinced it was my calling from God.
“After completing my secondary education, I began recording songs in the studio. I juggled this with selling recharge cards to make ends meet, even though my parents provided for me. The hustle was necessary to sustain my lifestyle and fund studio sessions”.
Spyro gained widespread recognition when his track ‘Who Is Your Guy’ went viral in 2023. The remix featuring Tiwa Savage earned them the prestigious Best Collaboration of the Year award at the 2023 Headies Awards.
