MTN asserts that there will be no forgiveness of debt for subscribers

The mobile telecommunications company, MTN, has attributed the recent cancellation of debts on its subscribers’ network to a system error. The company conveyed this information through a tweet on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle last Saturday.

MTN clarified that an unforeseen glitch in its system led to the inadvertent cancellation of debts owed by its network subscribers, emphasizing that the debt status remained unchanged.

Previously, users had expressed their satisfaction with the debt cancellation, with many speculating that MTN intentionally wiped out their debts. For instance, a user named Fatai exclaimed, “Debt has been paid. MTN debtors, check your account, MTN don clear una gbese.”

Another user, Ikechukwu Amara, shared, “What a time to be alive. I actually thought it was a joke until I did it myself; my N5,000 debt has been cancelled.”

A user known as Too Cute suggested that MTN might be running a nationwide giveaway, leading to the cancellation of all debts owed.

However, a user named Bukola was skeptical, asserting that MTN wouldn’t give anything for free without benefiting in the end. Bukola commented, “Una dey trust company for this country. How will MTN, facing this economic downturn, dash Nigerians such a huge amount of money? How will they make it up? This one na Shege pro max all of una go see (sic).”

In response to the situation, MTN, via its support handle, stated, “Yello, we are aware that some of our customers’ xtratime debt was cleared. It was a system glitch, the airtime was not cleared. The issue is receiving attention from our support team, and feedback will be shared once received. Thank you.”
