Mikel Obi revealed that there were tears among Chelsea players when Jose Mourinho was dismissed from his managerial position.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi recently shared a poignant moment from his time at the club, recalling how he and his teammates were moved to tears when José Mourinho was sacked as the head coach during his initial tenure. Mikel revealed the emotional atmosphere that enveloped the training ground, emphasizing the difficulty of saying goodbye to a manager who had recently secured two Premier League titles.

Reflecting on the departure, Mikel expressed the unique bond the team shared with Mourinho, affectionately known as the “special one.” Despite the heart-wrenching farewell, he highlighted the resilience of the players, noting that they managed to compose themselves for training on the same day.

“It’s hard to say goodbye. For me, obviously, the most special one was when [Jose] Mourinho got sacked. A lot of people were in tears, were crying. It was very emotional because he had just won the Premier League twice, a young man and he is a special one,” Mikel shared on the latest episode of his podcast, The Obi One.

The midfielder painted a vivid picture of the surreal transition from tears to laughter on the training pitch shortly after Mourinho’s departure. Despite the initial emotional turmoil, the team quickly shifted their focus to the task at hand, exemplifying their professionalism. Mikel explained that the camaraderie prevailed as they engaged in training, redirecting their energy towards upcoming matches and the challenge of adapting to a new manager.

“We just moved on with it, but then after training, we started talking about it. Once we are on the pitch again, it’s like, ‘We’ve to get on with the job.’ We start training, focus on the next game and the next manager and how to get back to winning ways because the reason when Mourinho was sacked was because we were not winning games,” Mikel recounted.
